The Kama Sutra Movie
Depicts Teachings
From The Kama Sutra
Book
The Kama Sutra book is an ancient Indian
text that was written to dictate to men and women how to
properly please one another, not only sexually, but in the art
of pursuing a mate, how to treat each other, how to propose
marriage, how to be a courtesan or how to treat a courtesan.
The Kama Sutra book has 37 chapters on what is important in
life and how to get it in the 4th Century B.C. India.
In 1997 a Kama Sutra movie was released
entitled Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. The movie was filmed in
India, although to acquire the rights to film in India the
producers had to temporarily rename the movie during production
because the Indian government would not have allowed it to be
made otherwise. The movie is directed by Mira Nair and stars
Indira Varma, Sarita Choudhury, Naveen Andrews (The English
Patient), and Ramon Tikaram. The Kama Sutra movie is a sensual
adaptation of the lessons learned from the Kama Sutra book.
The premise of the Kama Sutra movie is two
girls, Tara, a princess, and Maya, her servant, who became best
friends at a very young age despite their social differences.
As they become older, they find themselves at odds over men
when the princess Tara realizes that Maya is the one who men
are sexually attracted to, including her would be husband and
king.
When Maya, out of spite, seduces the king on
his wedding night she is banished from the kingdom by Tara. On
her journey from the Kingdom, Maya meets a stone carver, and
friend of the king, Jai and they fall in love. Their love is
threatened when Maya becomes interested in another man, a Kama
Sutra teacher named Rasa. This is where the story begins to
really unfold into a tragic love story that has been compared
to Shakespearian style. I won’t spoil the movie for you, but I
will tell you that it is a sensual and sexual journey into 16th
Century India that is beautifully depicted and a wonderful way
to explore the teachings of the Kama Sutra book as well as
learn about India in the days of old.
The Kama Sutra movie is highly recommended,
especially for a couple who need a little spark for the
evening. I wouldn’t recommend it for the children, however, as
there are sex scenes with full frontal female nudity and plenty
of violence.
