Kama Sutra, a high-profiled ancient book of sexual pleasures and is considered to be one of the few books that is being used by scholars in understanding the current mores and social structures of Indian culture during its 4th century release. Written by a man named Vatsyayana in Sanskrit, Kama Sutra has been known to be a book where it depicts the importance of erotic pleasures along with religion and material success. But is that all Kama Sutra could attest to its effectiveness as a book? Very unlikely.

The original Sanskrit translation, the word kama means “desire” and sutra means “rules.” Based from the ancient Hindus teaching, life is actually guided by 3 purposes and these are:

(1) to achieve religious success

(2) accomplish material success and

(3) enjoy sexual pleasures.

These three purposes are equally important for an Indian and part of the 3rd purpose, erotic pleasure is considered to be an uplifting experience of living the beauty of life.

As kama sutra was written as a book and a guide because of its directions and must dos, there were total of 7 chapters in the book that actually relates the stages of a man’s life. Rationally, the book is intended to be read by men in the ancient India.

Kama sutra was written by an upper class man and is intended to be applied by the men in the society. However, looking at the 7 chapters of the book, there were portions of the book that discuss ways on how a woman could seduce a man, how she could entice a man to keep herself as his partner, ways on how to please her man and how a wife should conduct herself.

So while many of the 7 chapters of the book focus on how a man could seduce a woman, methods on how to engage a woman in a sexual intercourse, understanding kama sutra requires more than just knowing all these historical findings.
